October 5th, Cape Breton University Library, 3PM
A generous donation from Louis Maroun & Dr. Magdy El Kady has allowed the Cape Breton University (CBU) Library to build the Maroun El-Kady Collection: English-language materials that cover culture, economics, geography, history, and political science about the Middle East. While an increasing number of print and electronic books about the Middle East are being added to the CBU Library collection, in this event we highlight some of our new arrivals, particularly in the areas of music of the Arab and Islamicate worlds, by having honourable guest Dr. Anne K. Rasmussen provide a presentation. Dr. Rasmussen is Professor of Music and Ethnomusicology, the Bickers Professor of Middle Eastern Studies, and Director of the W&M Middle Eastern Music Ensemble at the College of William and Mary. She is also currently the President of the Society for Ethnomusicology.
Dr. Rasmussen (the picture on the left) will provide a brief address about studies of musics in the Middle East. She will then be joined in a short musical performance by her colleague, ethnomusicologist Dr. Anne Elise Thomas, and percussionist Hansen Millison.
