Svanibor Pettan

 Kosovo through the Eyes of Local Romani Musicians 

Svanibor Pettan– Is professor and chair of the ethnomusicology program at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. His academic degrees are from the universities of Zagreb (B.A.), Ljubljana (M.A.), and Maryland (Ph.D.). He was the first ethnomusicologist in what was Yugoslavia to conduct fieldwork outside of Europe for his academic degree theses (Zanzibar 1982, Egypt 1986-1987), followed by the fieldwork with Romani musicians in Kosovo (1989-91). His field research experience also includes Slovenia and other parts of former Yugoslavia, Australia, Norway, Sri Lanka, Turkey, and the United States of America.

Prof. Pettan’s publications are concerned with music in the context of politics and war, multiculturalism, music of minorities, ethnomusicology of Central and Southeastern Europe, and with theory and practice of applied ethnomusicology. Most influential among them are: Music, Politics, and War: Views from Croatia (ed., 1998), Music and Minorities (co-ed., 2001), Rom Musicians and Kosovo: Interaction and Creativity (2002), “Male, Female, and Beyond in Culture and Music of the Roma in Kosovo” (2003), “Balkan Boundaries and How to Cross Them” (2007), Applied Ethnomusicology (ed., 2008), Lambada na Kosovu (Lambada in Kosovo; 2010), Applied Ethnomusicology: Historical and Contemporary Approaches (co-ed., 2010), Etnomuzikologija na razpotju (Ethnomusicology at the Crossroads; 2011), Kosovo Through the Eyes of Local Romani (Gypsy) Musicians (2015), Oxford Handbook of Applied Ethnomusicology (co-ed., 2015), Music, Sound and Ecology (ed., 2016), and Contemporary Traditional Music in Slovenia (ed., 2016).

He was a visiting professor at the universities of Oslo, Washington, Illinois, and at Tainan National University of the Arts; visiting scholar at Wesleyan, Brown, Chicago, and Griffith universities; and external evaluator at the University of Limerick. He gave more than 70 invited lectures at universities in various parts of the world and currently serves as President of the Cultural and Ethnomusicological Society Folk Slovenia and Secretary General of the International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM).
