Dr. Marcia Ostashewski is a scholar, musician, teacher, administrator, and leader with a decades long career pioneering research through a commitment to relationship building, social justice, anti-racism, reconciliation and decolonization. Her work is based on an ethics of mutual care and support, and is dedicated to investigating and documenting the creative and cultural expressions of communities across Canada as well as their transnational aspects. Dr. Shauna MacDonald, Associate Director

Dr. Shauna M. MacDonald is a storyteller, academic creative, and performer. She returned to Cape Breton University as an Associate Professor of Communication in July 2020. While she has spent 15 years at U.S. institutions of higher education, being from Cape Breton has always grounded her life and work, and she is thrilled to return to CBU, where she earned her B.A. in 2005. As of July 1, 2021, Dr. MacDonald stepped into the role of CSC Associate Director, following Dr. Sheila Christie’s three-year term. Leim Joe

Leim Joe is a student at Cape Breton University with a concentration in ethnomusicology. This past summer Leim finished the requirements for the BA program and will graduate in November 2024. He has recently been enrolled into St. FX University for the Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey Cohort Bachelor of Education program, a part-time program with a focus on Mi’kmaq educational perspectives and learning. Leim also serves in the Canadian Forces as a reservist with the Cape Breton Highlanders Infantry Unit where he has taught multiple courses, including the Black Bear program, a Basic Military program for Indigenous youth in Atlantic Canada.
